Exploring our senses at BestStart Faringdon

In the Tawaki room, we believe in creating oppurtunities for learning, no matter where they come from, and embracing the way our learners take hold of it. We will often find unique and quirky ways of using our resources to really get our tamariki thinking about the different ways they can use it. Here for example, we told the tamariki that today we will be painting and that was it. When they arrived to the table they were taken a back by the fact that the paint was hidden underneath the glad wrap. When we asked them to try and mix the colours, they very quickly sat down and got busy trying to push the paint and create all sorts of colours. Whilst this may seem like a simple way of using paint, we could see that our tamariki were so excited by the fact that it wasnt just a simple painting activity, but one that would allow them to get messy and be creative with the different ways we could mix the paint. They were able to use their senses to explore. Our tamariki were so inventive and creative as they manipulated the colours around the table that they started to create so many different conversations with both their kaiako and their friends. We could see that they were really thinking about what they could both see and feel, as the colours moved and changed, which for us as kaiako was the most rewarding part of this creative play. That, and of course the glad wrap popping and covering us all in paint!
