Talofa Lava everyone, this vaiaso/wiki/week, as a centre, we have been focusing on Samoan Language Week.  The theme for this year is: ‘Lalaga le si’osi’omaga mo se lumana’i manuia’ - ‘Weave an environment for a better future’.

We have been really busy with te mahi/auai/engaging and whakawhitiwhiti/gaioiga/engrossing with learning about Samoan culture from learning greeting songs, learning to count from 1 to 10 (tasi, lua, tolu, fa, lima, ono, fitu, valu, iva, sefulu). Our tamaiti/tamariki had the whai hua/ avanoa/opportunity to do te auaha/foafoaga/creative art from making tapa print and tauira/mamanu/patterns and making head gear using puawai/fugalaau/flowers. As we embrace their values, tikanga/tradition from kai/meaai/food, kanikani/dance, kākahu/costumes, art and craft our tamaiti and kaiako/faiaoga are building matauranga/malamalama/knowledge and mōhio/lauiloa/awareness of how taua/significant these traditions and uara/taua/values within our Samoan hapori/nuu/community.

In Te Whāriki celebrating culture lagolago/supports the Belonging strand in Goal 1: Children and their whanau/fanau/families experience an environment where they can affirm and extend connecting links with the family and the wider world.Goal 3: Children and their families experience an environment where they feel comfortable with the routines, customs and regular events.

Our tamariki are displaying whanaungatanga in making connections to other cultures differ from their own and having a sense of belonging. They are also displaying tikanga in ways of being and doing that have been handed and taught and doing and learning it the right way.

Our tamariki had the opportunity to learn pese/waiata/song "Va'ai i le pepe, Talofa lava, and the sasa. We also learn the meaai tatalo/kai prayer in te reo Hamoa/Samoa and doing hand actions to tell a story. Our tamariki performed brilliantly and had the confidence to stand in front of their parent and whanau. In conclusion we had a big kai/meaai/food to commemorate the day. We, BestStart Manukau would like to extend our alofa/aroha/love to all parent/fanau/whanau for their awesome support and contribution towards this event.

Fa'afetai tele lava.
