Today is the lunar Chinese New Year. All the tamariki at BestStart Cornwall street are celebrating this red festival with different activities.

In our Tongarerewa (Infants) room we are decorating our room with red lanterns, Chinese writing, balloons and tamariki’s art work. Our young tamariki coloured dumplings, learned and sang Chinese songs, listened to Chinese stories and most the important thing, we all had yummy dumplings for lunch!

In Pūrerehua (preschool) room, tamariki are busy creating a dragon while using disposable materials, such as a big cardboard box, paper plates, bottle lids, egg cartons, yoghurt containers and paper. Tamariki were engaged painting the box orange and decorating it with other materials to make a dragon. Then we had a turn to do the dragon dance together!

This learning moment demonstrated the aspect of showing respect for others, the ability to identify and accept another point of view, and acceptance of and ease of interaction with their peers (Ministry of Education, 2017).

Also, children are learning from different culture. They experience the stories and symbols of their own and other cultures, by recognising print symbols and concepts and using them with enjoyment, meaning and purpose. (Te Whāriki, Ministry of Education)
