Xīn Nián Kuài Lè! 新年快乐! Happy Chinese New Year 2023! This year's Chinese new year is the year of the rabbit. Rabbit is the fourth of the 12 Chinese zodiac animals. Luna new year is an important family celebration and it is a 15 days festival. Family and friends gather to wish each other luck, happiness and wealth for the new year.

At BestStart Lambie, our children were learning the Chinese culture at mat times. Such as, stories about red envelopes, lion/dragon dance, Chinese food and learning to use chopsticks. During the week, the children enjoyed making lanterns, round folding fans to decorate our room. They were excited to see the lanterns hanging up. And, a dragon for dragon dance. We also made red envelopes with gold coins (chocolate).

Red envelopes filled with money (chocolate gold coins) - meaning good wishes and luck for the new year ahead for our children to take with them at home time. On Friday, our children dressed up in red, gold and yellow colours to celebrate Chinese new year. They made dumplings for lunch and they enjoyed it with their friends. By learning about different cultures, children explored the values such as diversity and respect. They also developed key competencies such as thinking, relating to others, participating and contributing.
