This week in the Kiwi room we have been celebrating Chinese New Year. This year is the Year of the Tiger.

As the legend goes, the Jade Emperor challenged all the animals in the Kingdom to a "Great Race". Whoever arrived at his palace first would win his favour. The tiger was sure that he would win but ended up placing third after the cunning rat and workhorse ox snuck in ahead of him. Thus, tigers are incredibly competitive people, known for their bravery and confidence. And, while Tigers are ambitious, they are also extremely generous with a drive to help others.

In the Kiwi Room we celebrated by creating and making. We started the week off by making our own lanterns which we hung above the window. Then as the week progressed we coloured in tigers, made tiger masks, and made tiger faces out of paper plates. The children were so proud of their work so we hung it up for all to see and those who wanted to take it home did so.

Kiwi room children have also learnt how to say "Hello" (Ni Hao) and "Thank You" (Do Je) in Cantonese.

On Thursday we had a special visitor come to the Kiwi room - Sadie's Mum. Teresa shared with us some traditional clothing (Cheongsam) which some of the children were able to try on, and she also brought along some custard buns (Nai Wong Bao) that were steamed up and eaten. The children asked some questions about what food Sadie's family eats and if they do anything special to celebrate. Thank you very much to both Sadie and Teresa for sharing with us things are special to you at Chinese New Year.

To make our lanterns children got to practice cutting the paper on the lines. This was the hardest bit as we didn't want to cut right to the end of the piece of paper. We then unfolded the paper, and opened it up and then wrapped it around a different coloured piece of paper. Once everything was stuck together we hung them up.
