新年快乐 Xīnnián kuàilè!! Happy Luna new year! Here at Tawa South we love a cultural celebration. Luna new year has just passed and we celebrated this event alongside our whanau. We had been busy with lots of different learning experiences. We spent time making different arts, a couple varieties of lanterns, some with cellophane and dura seal and others with paper and glitter to hang outside.

As it is the year of the dragon we also did some art work creating dragons. We had a traditional tea ceremony with carnation tea at lunch time which also consisted of nian gao which is a rice cake symbolising prosperity. Tamariki went up to Mahuri to have a mat time where they spoke about the year of the dragon.

We have also made our wishes for the year of 2024 which we hung around or door frame to drive away bad sprits. We also showed tamariki and practiced how to receive hóngbāo which is to symbolise good luck and wishes for the upcoming year.

We love to celebrate as much as we can of all the different cultures within our centre, we believe it is so important that that tamariki feel seen, represented and celebrated in our environment. This is also linking to our Te Whariki curriculum Belonging strand "Making connections between people, places and things in their world| te waihanga hononga."

Again we wish all our families who celebrate the lunar new year a happy and joyful one.
