A focus on sensory exploration
Infant House have been exploring our senses. We have had water to pour, mix and splash, ice to touch, move and taste. There has been water in our sand which caused lots of excitement as our tamariki and pēpi mixed, transported and discovered the texture as it changed.
We have been watering our garden, our tamariki love to use the watering can, to ensure every plant is cared for. They are learning the joy of caring for Papatūānuku and growing their own vegetables and herbs. Caring for Papatūānuku is one way to support our tamariki to care for our planet and learn sustainable ways of being. It teaches practical life skills and provides sensory experiences.
Sensory exploration encourages learning through exploration, curiosity, problem solving and creativity. It helps to build nerve connections in the brain and encourages the development of language and motor skills.
Infant House has a strong focus on sensory exploration which is supported by the Montessori philosophy and our national early childhood curriculum, Te Whāriki.
