A haka for our school leavers

This month the tamariki (children) are practicing a haka (performance dance) that they created to celebrate a special occasion, three of their friends are leaving for school.

When we asked them how it mad them feel? The reply was:

Love – for them as they are their friends

Sad – as they will be leaving them

Excited – for them as they are going to primary school (meaning that they are big boys and girls now)

Pride – as they are friends that are cared about and loved in our preschool whanau (family)

What resulted from that korero (talk) was a haka’s lyrics that involved those four words.
