A new experience with pegs

Recently the teachers facilitated a new experience outside. It was a simple activity that you could set up by whanau at home. Nga tamariki really enjoyed this experience and returned to it often during the week.

Pegs and paper was all you needed. First, we had the challenge of working out which part of the peg we had to squeeze and how to hold it in our hands. Then we discussed colours of the paper and pegs. To begin with the children practiced the fine motor skill of putting the pegs on the paper, then as they got more skilled they began making more specific choices around colours and making patterns. The children then began to teach others that came to the experience and help them to find the colours that they wanted. During this experience the children were learning and developing their fine motor skills, colour naming, communication skills and leadership.

Have a go at home!
