A Rocket Experiment
We have been doing a lot of inquiry based experiments at Montessori Arrowtown lately and we thought it might be fun to make a rocket. So first we had to find some kind of instructions on how we could make one, and then we had to gather the resources needed to do this. The ingredients we needed to make our rocket were a small bottle, alka seltzer and warm-hot water. There was a lot of discussion on whether our rocket that we were making would work or not.
We tried about four times with different temperatures in the water but we could not get our rocket to fly. So we had a big discussion about why it didn't work. The question I asked was "Why do you think our rocked didn't fly?" the answers were: The bottle was too big. The water was too hot. The water was too cold. There were not enough alka seltzer tablets put into the bottle. I explained to the children that some times experiments didn't work and that's how scientist found out things. We have decided to try again, perhaps we might have better luck next time.
