A Sense Of Community

A Sense Of Community

Today’s excursion made several connections to our local Community.  Firstly, we paid a visit to the Kāpiti Community Food Bank to drop off our donations of food before heading to the Library, and then on our return trip to Kindy we stopped off at Parakai park for a play.

Over the last few months we have done a lot of social and emotional role modelling with our tamariki about what it means to be a “Super Hero.”  To support this learning we invited in some “real life” Super Heroes from our community – we had Nurses Ruth and Catherine from Team Medical, John our Community Constable, and the on-call crew from Paraparaumu Fire Brigade to teach our tamariki about the good work that they do on a daily basis to help and support people in need.  What an awesome opportunity and meaningful learning experience for all our tamariki to hear from these amazing Super Heroes who live and work in our community!

Today, it was our turn to give back to this wonderful community that we live in.  We put on our BestStart Super Hero vests and headed out to connect with a special group of people who have worked really hard this year to look after lots of families in need, the Kāpiti Community Food Bank.  The lovely Kerry Lovell, Co-ordinator at the bank greeted us on arrival and welcomed our food parcel donation saying that it was great timing.

With all that has happened this year, and particularly now, leading into Christmas every contribution made is greatly appreciated – it was huge bucket filler for us all and we left  feeling really good about being kind and thoughtful about others less fortunate.

We then made our way to the Library - what better way to encourage the love of books and reading than by connecting to and experiencing this community hub firsthand.  The tamariki had a great time looking through books and choosing what to read … in fact, they had quite a hard time deciding which books they wanted to borrow for their Kindy friends to enjoy … there were so many fantastic stories!  With books issued it was time to head back, but not before having a play at Parakai park.  Thrill was the main motivator as they all took on the challenges the park had to offer – climbing, sliding, balancing, and swinging… they had a great time!

What better way to nurture a sense of belonging for tamariki to their community than through quality connections and meaningful opportunities.
