Manawatia a Matariki whᾱnau. This month we emphasised the celebration of Matariki by sharing stories, creating artwork and having time where our community could come in and spend time with us as a Centre. The tamariki have enjoyed creating stars to represent Hiwa-i-te rangi – the stars that represent the future. We made kites or manu tukutuku to represent the seven kites of Matariki. We also sang waiata to help us learn the significance and meaning of why we celebrate Matariki.

A very special time that we acknowledge here in Aotearoa. We enjoyed special whᾱnau guests who came into the centre to share their knowledge in te reo and read us stories of atua and Matariki. We ended our celebrations with an evening celebrating with our whᾱnau, sharing kai together to honour Tupu-a-nuku and Tupu-a-rangi and making a bonfire under the Matariki night sky, the marshmallows were delicious.

Our tamariki proudly showcased the waiata they have learnt to their whᾱnau and the room presented itself like a canvas displaying all the wonderful art that has been created over the month. Evenings like this embody all that we value here at BestStart Welcome Bay. Cherishing our connections with our whᾱnau and making memories for our tamariki to carry with them. What a wonderful example of manaakitanga here at Beststart Welcome Bay.
