January has been a busy month at Kensington Crossing, particularly for transitions. Our kaiako have been focused on welcoming new whānau into our under-2s Pipi Room, transitioning tamariki across the centre, and supporting those heading off to school.

In 2024, we reviewed our current transition processes, seeking whānau feedback and exploring research on best practices for transitions. These changes ensure a smoother and more supportive experience for tamariki and their families. Transitions begin as soon as whānau enter the building, where they are warmly greeted by Bruce, our friendly Centre Administrator.

Visits are scheduled, and whānau are kept informed throughout the entire process via emails and settling visits. These visits are tailored to each child’s individual needs, with feedback sought from whānau through family feedback surveys once their children have settled. Kensington Crossing is proud to maintain a 100% success rate with onboarding new families into the centre.

Preparing tamariki to leave Kensington Crossing and transition to school is another significant part of our programme. January saw many of our tamariki graduating from Kensington Crossing and getting ready to start primary school. Graduations are a cherished ritual at our centre, involving whānau and celebrating the confident, competent children who have flourished in their learning and development.

Our focus on transitions aligns with Te Whāriki's Well-being and Belonging strands and the principle of Relationships, along with our centre vision and philosophy. These elements guide our efforts to ensure that both tamariki and whānau feel welcomed and supported, whether they are settling into the centre, moving between classrooms, or transitioning to school.
