Celebrating Diwali at BestStart Napier Central
Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, signifies the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil, and the renewal of life. At BestStart Napier Central, we recently had so much fun celebrating this special festival. It was a wonderful opportunity to engage with our community families from India. We were able to add an extra layer of aroha by helping to strengthen a sense of belonging for these families who have migrated here and now call Aotearoa home.
With expertise and guidance, kaiako and tamariki were offered opportunities to learn all about Diwali. They explored the festival through creative activities such as henna art, making diya lamps, creating mandala patterns, and wearing traditional clothing generously loaned to us by one of our families.
We ended our week-long festivities by coming together to celebrate with a feast featuring a variety of cultural dishes, all enjoyed while sipping mango lassi.
At BestStart Napier Central, we believe in recognising, embracing, and celebrating the uniqueness of cultural diversity. Working in partnership with our families, we learn about their cultures, hear their valuable stories, explore artefacts and customs, and listen to new languages, enriching our community and fostering a sense of belonging for all.
