One of our favourite resources for our tamariki are boxes. They provide open ended and free exploration that plays a very important role in learning. Look at the photos, a box can become so much more than the practical uses we know them for.

A place to hide, a train, a fire engine, a treasure chest, the fun in pushing your friend around or being the one taken for a ride or even more simply, something to use for transporting items from one place to another during their play. Sometimes we use them as a canvas for art with no objective in mind, just providing an opportunity to paint, use collage and even papier-mâché. The imagination, exploration and creativity are endless.

Our Tamariki might just want to jump on them and flatten them and that’s ok to, there doesn’t always have to be an end result as the learning is just as meaningful. We get many boxes during the week, and they are such a valued resource. We have so much aroha for these varied sized cubes of fun!
