ANZAC Day at Pharazyn Street Kindy
When we got to the Memorial, we talked about the importance of the Memorial and why ANZAC Day is so important for New Zealanders in this day and age.
Through this experience, the children are learning about New Zealand history and the cultural significant aspect to why New Zealand has a public holiday for this special day. The children are learning to cope with change because this is not an every day experience and they are learning how to keep themselves safe in the community by following instructions.
The man who came to visit us is named Robin Wishart. He was in World War two but he didn't go away. He stayed here in New Zealand to protect our lands here.
He showed some of his families medals off to us including his own. He showed us a map about where World War one happened and then we tried on war clothes that he has brought. Our children we really interested that our mat time lasted 30 minutes.
Michelle facilitated making ANZAC biscuits with the children. The tipped, poured and measured out the ingredients that we needed. We each took a turn stirring and shaping the biscuits.
Through this experience, the children are learning about New Zealand history and the cultural significant aspect to why New Zealand has a public holiday for this special day. Through biscuit making, the children are learning maths skills such as measuring and volume. They are developing turn taking abilities and science, the knowledge that when we mix these together, and with heat equals biscuits. This relates to our Kindy vision of our children's learning is enriched by bicultural and global perspectives.
