ANZAC memorial day
ANZAC Day is a public holiday in New Zealand on 25th April. This holiday marks the anniversary of the first key military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. We had celebrated ANZAC day in Best Start Lambie through variety of learning opportunities. The children saw video of the story of ANZAC day describing the contribution of New Zealand soldiers towards the war cause. The story was providing lot of information about the pride of being New Zealander and New Zealand flag. The book “Lest we forget” was read to children which provoked their thinking and built on children’s vocabulary about ANZAC. The pre-schoolers revisited this book to understand the sacrifices of New Zealand soldiers and learn about the values of patriotism.
Our children witnessed trombone played in our centre by a boy Yuvraj from our community. Listening to the music, children, and the teachers from Tui and Pukeko room did ANZAC march. The poppy flowers were created by tamariki with paper which were worn by them. This was our way of remembering and showing respect to the fallen soldiers who fought during the war. Though our tamariki are too young to make sense of the wars and sacrifice we are confident that as they will grow up, they will remember these celebrations and will be able to reconnect and make sense. The children wore red colour which made the environment ready for the cause of love towards country.
