Art is fun!
Our Piwakawaka room learners are having a blast learning and exploring a variety of art resources. They love creating new pictures for their whanau, and to decorate their room.
Over the past few weeks, our kaiako have supported the tamariki curiosity by creating activities that will peak their curiosity, as they introduce the tamariki to new art materials each week. During observations, our kaiako also noticed that the tamariki love doing their art in different settings, both inside and outside, and while sitting or lying down.
Through active supervision, our kaiako have been very intentional in creating different oppertunities for the tamariki to explore. One of these was a real hit, when our kaiako put on music, gave the tamariki pages and pencils, and they all found a space in the room to lie down in a calming area and draw together. This was a really special moment and it was lovely to see the tamariki share their ideas and drawings with their friends and their kaiako. Mastering skills, completing art projects and learning to express themselves in new ways helps tamariki gain confidence and perseverance.
Art also helps young children to develop both gross and fine motor skills, and helps young children to have those moments of understanding cause and effect through opportunities to create using a Process Art methodology - meaning that children learn by doing.
