At BestStart Hillcrest children have the opportunity to learn through active exploration of the environment. A feast of subtle colours can be seen through the seasonal changes of autumn and winter. Plum leaves, acorms and oak leaves are evidence of the changing season...what a lovely opportunity for the children to explore with their senses these seasonal changes. The children delighted in gathering the fallen leaves together from the playground. 

A discussion on the shape, colour, texture and size of the various leaves, developed, and why they fall from the trees at this time of the year...Autumn. Summer ends, Autumn comes, the days get shorter and cooler. This is how the trees know to begin getting ready for winter.

  Understanding the way our environment ‘works’ is a complex concept for young children. The experience of discovering these natural resources, and working purposely with them provides links for children between themselves and the world they live in. There is lots of sweeping and raking to be done to collect up all the leaves
