We took the children at BestStart Naenae to play in the crunchy Autumn leaves that had fallen in the Naenae community. This is something some of our teachers remember doing in the same spot as a child and we wanted the children in our centre to have the same experience.

On our way to the leaves we looked at the bare trees and talked about why the leaves fall. The children expressed that the leaves fall from the trees because "they are old", this opened up the conversation for us to learn about the change is seasons and what happens when it becomes colder outside.

Once we had arrived where all the leaves were, the children took off running through them, throwing them up in the air, throwing them at each other, lying and rolling in them. The children loved this experience as laughter echoed in the trees, we discussed the different colours of the leaves that had fallen and observed how spectacular they are.

We decided that we would collect some of the leaves to bring back to the centre so that we could share the learning experience with the rest of our friends. Nature and place based learning is something we are focusing on here at Beststart Naenae so watch this space for more exciting nature walks.
