Here at BestStart Hokowhitu in Palmerston North, we have a child who has recently transitioned from our Tui Room as she has recently turned two. An interactive colour mixing activity was set up for tamariki to explore, by using pipettes. At first, Eloise had difficulty working the pipettes. Kaiako sat and demonstrated how to use the tools and discussed with Eloise how the two colours can make a new colour. Eloise then spent a lot of time independently working on this activity without much more guidance or support from kaiako. When Eloise had finished, she placed the pipettes back in the jars and moved on to the next activity.

Our centre culture is evident throughout as kaiako set the same expectation of respecting each other, our environment and our resources. Kaiako view tamariki as confident and competent leaders. In each room kaiako take the time to support individuals capabilities, their skills and stage of development, which is clearly shown through this activity.
