We had a long period of COVID restrictions, where the children have been unable to prepare and serve their own food. Thankfully now we are back to normal and we are reinstating food preparation activities with the children.

A week or so ago, we juiced oranges and the children were able to later enjoy the orange juice with their lunch. This week, we have been making yummy treats for everyone to enjoy at afternoon tea.  Today’s baking activity was bread rolls, so there were lots of steps to prepare the dough before it goes into the oven.  This meant most of the children could be involved in some part of the process and all got to enjoy the results.

Before we start our baking, we talk about and look at the ingredients so the children build their understandings about what each one does in the cooking process e.g. yeast helps the bread dough grow. We then guide the children but they do all the work of measuring, mixing and then rolling the dough.  We have also made cheese scones this week which, along with the bread rolls, have been shared at afternoon tea times.
