Our tamariki enjoyed an amazing visit to Manukau library today on Baisakhi celebrations.

Vaisakhi, also known as Baisakhi, is an ancient harvest festival celebrated across the Punjab region. Vaisakhi is also celebrated as Sikh New Year based on Hindu Solar calendar. Sikhs also celebrate Vaisakhi as the day of the formation of the Khalsa (the pure one). Children prepared for a dance performance that was on a Punjabi song. This traditional dance is very popular in India and people celebrate by dancing, wearing costumes and enjoy yummy food.

We were welcomed with open arms at library and two amazing teachers from library had prepared lots of activities particularly for Baisakhi celebrations. First our tamariki performed which was excellent and everyone at the library appreciated their perfect performance.

After that, children were told a little context about this celebration and teachers from library read a short story to explain them with visual aids. Children also counted some scarfs in Punjabi language, and they showed some interest in colouring too. Through colouring also, tamariki was able to understand more about the culture as the pictures were related to the occasion.

Attached are some beautiful pictures of our tamariki enjoying this festival. Their dance video is also beautifully captured and attached.
