At Botany Junction, our preschool children have been showing a keen interest in mark-making and drawing. The art and creativity table has become a very popular place in the preschool room. The kaiako's have been providing an environment that is rich in print and written languages from all cultures.

The different art and writing medium that are available for our tamariki has extended their interest further. Mark-making in all forms is encouraged starting from the toddler room, this can take on a number of forms using very different materials. For example, scribbling on a piece of paper using a crayon, making patterns in the sand or mud using a stick, or painting shapes with their fingertips or handprints.

Through the rich experiences that are being provided to our tamariki they are developing an understanding that symbols can be ‘read’ by others and that thoughts, experiences, and ideas can be represented as words, pictures, numbers, sounds, shapes, models, and photographs in print and digital formats. Our tamariki are encouraged to share their thought and ideas at hui time on a regular basis. Tamariki in best start botany junction are confident and competent learners.
