Beachside learning
At BestStart Whangamata we are taking steps to learn about our community and we grabbed the opportunity to sneak out on a beautiful day to have our kai at the beach. In the background you can see Tuhua and Hauturu islands. Our tamariki are learning about the legend of Poutini and the obsidian and the conversations and learning happening are amazing.
"Whanga" means harbour and 'mata' means obsidian so the translation of our place name is the obsidian washed up in the harbour. We also have some lovely large pieces of obsidian on display.
We're making connections relevant and ensuring little pieces of information are meaningful for our children.
