At our centre, tuff tray activities are an important part of our play-based curriculum, supporting children’s curiosity, creativity and holistic development. Tuff trays provide a large, inviting space for open-ended exploration, allowing children to engage with a wide range of materials such as natural resources, loose parts, sensory elements and role-play provocations.
These experiences encourage children to explore at their own pace, collaborate with others and return to ideas as they deepen their learning. Tuff tray learning strongly aligns with Exploration – Mana Aotūroa from Te Whāriki. Through hands-on play, children investigate cause and effect, experiment with materials and develop working theories about their world. Activities such as pouring, building, sorting and transforming materials support problem-solving, resilience and confidence as capable learners.
These experiences also support Communication – Mana Reo. As children play together, they share ideas, use language to negotiate and explain their thinking, and express themselves through storytelling and symbolic play. Children of all abilities can gather around and participate together, supporting the development of social skills.
Educators intentionally enrich this learning by introducing new language, encouraging conversation and providing opportunities for mark-making. Overall, tuff tray activities create inclusive, engaging learning spaces where children’s voices, strengths and interests are valued and celebrated.
