As the weather is starting to get warmer the children in the Koru (3 ½ - 5 years) have been talking about their garden and what fruit and vegetables they can plant there. As an extension of this kaiako have planned small group excursions to our local Plant Barn to purchase plants for the garden

This morning a very excited group of children put on their green vests and headed off down the road. The conversation was flowing as children and teachers were asking questions about what they could see, hear and smell along the way. Crossing the road at the traffic lights was a great time to talk about road safety and the direction that children go when they head home from the centre. We were lucky enough to see two trees with very different seeds on them which prompted a conversation about how they grow.

As we paused in front of the Plant Barn it was an opportunity to talk about what the children expected to see when they got inside and if they had been there before. When we headed inside the children were delighted to see all the plants and all their colours.

The children made their way between the plants calling to their friends about the plant that they had found in their favourite colour or a plant that was soft to touch or smell. There was the unexpected surprise of seeing a boysenberry plant that had a picture of ice cream on it, some of the children wondered if there was such a thing as an ice cream tree.

When it was time to leave the children picked out which plants they would take back to plant, and they choose to end up with watermelon, carrots, rosemary, eggplant and red capsicum. As part of our learning, the children will be looking at how these grow and making yummy treats with them. Would your child like planting and adventures in the local community?
