BestStart Brooklyn - Our Centre Philosophy

Our Centre Philosophy

As a mixed aged centre, BestStart Brooklyn understands the importance of whanaungatanga – building strong trusting relationships with whanau (family) members and encouraging the concept of tuakana teina, where the older children interact, support and care for the younger tamariki (children). Together as a combined centre we can grow and develop alongside each other.

We are respectful of all cultures and encourage all children to be proud of their heritage, culture, language and identity. We aim to provide an environment where we understand the uniqueness of having a dual heritage in New Zealand which is                     celebrated within our centre.

At BestStart Brooklyn, we believe that all tamariki are a taonga (precious gift) and they have an important voice.  Using the New Zealand Early Childhood Curriculum Te Whariki (2017) we provide an emergent curriculum that encourages all to become life-long learners and is based on the interests of the tamariki and whanau aspirations.

We aim to work together with our tamariki and whanau to promote a centre where nutrition and being physically active are an integral part of our daily routines.  We encourage our tamariki to be happy, healthy and active within our centre and the community.  Being visible and involved in our community will create a sense of belonging for our tamariki, their whanau, our teachers and BestStart Brooklyn.
