We have started our school visit this term with Papatoetoe Central School. This morning, some of our 4-year-olds had another opportunity to go on a transition visit to Papatoetoe Central School, which is where a lot of our children will be attending in the very near future.

They were divided into groups. Each group was assigned a classroom where they got to meet the teacher and the students in that particular class. They also took part in the different activities that morning. What stood out the most was the level of confidence of these preschoolers who seemed to be so at ease in a bigger learning environment. This is one positive sign that they are on their way to becoming ready for school life.

As usual, the walking trip to the school and back to the centre was also an opportunity for them to learn basic road safety such as walking as a group, being mindful at stoplights, and looking and listening for traffic as they are crossing. This supports our transitioning programme that we do to get children ready for school. We also have support from parents of children who are transitioning and this also helps parents to get a good understanding of what happens when children start school.
