Matariki is always a very exciting time for our tamariki as well as our whanau! It is a time to get together and celebrate new beginnings for our small community. It is also a time to honour our ancestors and those who left us since the last rising of Matariki  It is a time to make connections, revisit goals and make new ones. Matariki is also a time we celebrate language and culture within Aotearoa, New Zealand.

The period leading up to Matariki is filled with creative art work, from stars and  lanterns to group projects. It is also filled with stories and legends, learning about the stars and sharing stories  making connections and getting involved in dramatic play. The highlight is the annual Matariki Disco! This year we had our disco on the 29th of June and we had a great turn-out. The tamariki were excited to celebrate Matariki with their whānau, friends, and the community. It was such a great opportunity for the kaiako to connect, reconnect, and spend quality time with the whānau that participated. Our whanau all brought a plate to share, the children sang their favourite Matariki song, and there were lots of dancing and mingling happening! This is always a great opportunity for parents and Kaiako to get together.

Here’s looking forward to our next celebration!
