Blocks: Poro rākau
This month, as part of our regular curriculum reviews we are taking a closer look at our block area in the Investigators room. Blocks are valuable manipulative and creative resources for tamariki and ngā tamariki enjoy the wooden blocks as they offer an open ended opportunity for creativity and self expression.
Blocks also provide opportunities to develop maths, art, science, language and social skills as well as developing persistence, perseverance and problem solving - so a very valuable resource in our room.
As a team, we thought it would be great to add some pictures of buildings from around the world to stimulate our children’s thinking, extend their learning and provide a multi cultural perspective to increase sense of belonging. Kaiako have talked with the children about each building including where each was from - Petronus Towers in Malaysia, Taj Mahal in India, The Great Wall of China Stonehenge in the UK, Mount Fuji in Japan and He Ara Kotahi in Palmerston North.
Ngā tamariki placed the pictures on the wall by the building blocks and they have stimulated lots of interest. It’s so nice for our children to be able see these different buildings from around the world, make connections and link their learning and knowledge.
