Books and Storytelling at BestStart Lakeside Village
Books and storytime are key areas of play that support children with listening, speaking, reading, and writing. There are many engaging ways to support children's learning that will help them to be confident readers and writers. At BestStart Lakeside, our local librarian, Lynley, comes in every fortnight on a Thursday morning to read stories for our over 2-year-old tamariki.
Storytelling and reading picture books help build oral vocabulary which is good for their oral communication and reading skills. Listening to stories builds concentration, memory and comprehension skills, and engages their curiosity to learn more. Lynlee also brought in some books for the children to help them build pre-reading and writing skills. Access to a range of books helps develop an understanding of different social institutions and other people's perspectives.
The teaching team will be utilising the library books as part of their "transition to school" programme where children take home a book of their choice that they can read with their parents and siblings. In the centre during mat time, children will be encouraged to share what they learned about the book which will give them the opportunity to develop confidence and social skills. Thank you Lynley for this wonderful learning partnership for our tamariki!
