Kaiako Emily promised the tamariki that she would make her raisins dance!

We poured fizzy lemonade into the clear cups and the tamariki dropped some raisins into each cup. Then we watched carefully as the raisins began to dance!! Slowly at first, but then faster, the raisins fell to the bottom of the cup before moving back up to the top! We added more raisins to see what would happen and watched as these too, started bobbing up and down!

The science: We talked about the bubbles of carbon dioxide that make the lemon fizzy. These bubbles form around the edges of the raisins and get bigger. Eventually, these bubbles are big enough to make the raisins float up to the top of the liquid. When they get to the surface, some of the bubbles pop and the raisin falls back down to the bottom of the cup.
