Our July school holiday programme at BestStart Tauranga Central focussed on the seven stars of Matariki. As part of our learning journey about Tupu-a-nuku, we arranged for some of our children to visit the garden of a member of our ‘village’. They had a fantastic time spotting sheep, feeding the chickens, and learning about the growth cycle of an organic garden, first making compost, then planting seeds to take back to the centre vegetable garden, and finally harvesting some fruit and vegetables for our Matariki whanau feast which was scheduled for later in the week.

Being out in the community is a great way to build connections between home and centre while allowing children to make new discoveries and build a sense of the world around them.
