Bugs!
In Ruma Māia, we have been coming across lots of different bugs lately - Spiders, moths, cockroaches, worms, and even baby centipedes! Some children have been fascinated with taking care of them and finding them safe spots to place so they can be observed, whilst other children have decided to stay well away! In these photos, tamariki found a baby centipede. There were lots of exclamations and shouting, as they crowded around to see. The tamariki were very gentle with the centipede, ensuring it was kept safe at all times. Once the discovery, observations, and discussions had finished, the centipede was placed back to where it was found.
Looking at bugs is a great way for children to learn about the world around them. Each bug has a different growth cycle, habitat, and ecosystem, and children are able to appreciate what nature and science offer. There are over 10 quintillion (10,000,000,000,000,000,000) individual insects alive at any point, and more than 5.5 million species - that is plenty of insects to get children excited about learning! Our upcoming focus is around science and investigation - perfect for learning about bugs in our centre. We will be able to discover new things, be curious and confident, and explore being good kaitiaki in caring for and taking responsibility for living things around us.
