Building a bug hotel

At BestStart Gillies Avenue, we are continually looking at how we can make our centre even more environmentally friendly.

Over the Level 4 lockdown, one of our amazing Kaiako and her partner built a bug hotel for the centre. They plan to build more, so watch this space!

Bug hotels have enormous benefits for the local environment, they encourage beneficial insects to help control pests. They also stimulate biodiversity and ecological balance in the garden. They also offer a great opportunity for the tamariki to learn about sustainable gardening as well as the fun and interesting world of bugs!
