Recently, our tamariki have been adventuring out into our local community, strengthening their sense of whanaungatanga and making meaningful connections beyond our centre gates.
On a crisp, clear winter’s day, we wrapped up warm and set off to Nichol’s garden centre.
The children were excited to explore the different plants—each one sparking questions and conversation about what might grow in our own community garden. As part of our walk, we practised important road safety skills together.
Tamariki listened closely as we talked about looking both ways, using crossings, and walking together safely as a group. Each outing is a real-life opportunity to build confidence and awareness around keeping safe in our community. Afterwards, we visited the local pet shop.
Tamariki were fascinated by the axolotls as they glided gracefully in their tank, and delighted by the big white bunny enjoying its dinner. These simple moments sparked curiosity, joy, and opportunities for rich kōrerorero. By getting out and about, our tamariki are connecting with the people, places, and things in their world and wider community.
Each outing strengthens their sense of belonging and identity—important foundations for learning, as outlined in Te Whāriki. We look forward to more adventures, more conversations, and many more opportunities to nurture whanaungatanga—one walk (and safe crossing) at a time.
