Buildings and creations
BestStart Meadowbank tamariki was into ‘Buildings and Creations’ this month. Every day there was excitement and anticipation in the air as to what they are about to create. The tamariki have a range of materials to choose from, the most popular being the big wooden blocks outside. It is great to see the children making connections with what they have seen in real life like making ‘mums ice cream shop’ or a ‘farmhouse’ that they have stayed in recently. We have also set up a ‘loose parts’ play area to further challenge and support children’s thinking and creativity.
It is great to see the tamariki co creating by sharing ideas, space and by working together in a group. They also learn some amazing skills through building and construction , such as setting goals and solving problems, looking for shapes and patterns, classifying and sorting, guessing and comparing, using trial and error, planning, designing, using their gross motor and fine motor skills, persevering and completing tasks till the end. We teachers encourage the children to communicate their thoughts and ideas and scaffold them to move to complex levels of learning.
