This month at BestStart Tory Street, we celebrated Fijian language week. Ryna is from Fiji and she was very excited to learn and see pictures of her own country and she was supporting me at mat times with more information about Fiji. That is so sweet of you Ryna.

Since we started talking about Fiji, everybody started greeting each other saying, “Bula”. It was great to see the children greeting their friends in Fijian language. So, we learnt more words such as Vinaka, Moce etc.

We bought in a coconut, because coconut is a big part of Fijian cooking. We opened the coconut and tasted the coconut water and our tamariki loved tasting coconut pieces too. They wanted more and more coconut to eat. Therefore, we did some cooking with coconut. We made a coconut milk rice for morning tea and afternoon tea. We made a chickpea/potato coconut curry for lunch. Everyone enjoyed a bit of Fijian food.

We did Fijian turtle paintings and played Fijian childhood games using coconut shells and shoes.

Ryna’s mum and were so happy to see that Fijian language week display board. And everyone enjoyed learning about another culture.
