Caring for and enjoying our garden
Our tamariki absolutely love being kaitiaki (gaurdians) of our fruit and vegetable garden, learning about, nurturing and getting to sample the goods we received from Papatuanuku (earth mother).
The strawberries in our garden have been growing really well this year. We also have corn, brocolli, carrots and herbs growing too. Although, popping them all in the same garden may not have been the best option!
Most days at least one of our tamariki will ask their kaiako if they can water the garden so that "our strawberries will grow big and juicy." Teaching tamariki about and how to care for the natural world is something we value here at BestStart Fendalton and even our youngest 2 year olds get amongst taking care of the plants.
The tamariki love keeping an eye on the strawberries and seeing them turn from flowers, into little green strawberries, them starting to turn red and then finally becoming ready to eat! They will always let us know when a strawberry is ready to taste.
As you can see from the photos, they are super tasty! Ngā tamariki have been describing them as, "juicy, sweet, yummy, tasty and like lollies."
