Caring for our environment together
Caring for our environment is an important part of our Montessori curriculum. Children as young as 1yr old are shown how they can support and care for their place in the centre. Outside we have materials set up to support children to scrub, sweep and water our plants.
Here we have a child who noticed some chalk had been used for drawing and wanted to clean it up. He sat down and started scrubbing away. He even checked to make sure the chalk was going away and pointed to show me how he was cleaning the chalk. This activity is great as it helps support using big motor muscles to scrub the chalk away. Children develop a sense of care and respect for their environment when they are active participants in helping keep our garden clean.
Once he finished scrubbing, he then stood up and carried the dish and poured the empty water into our plants. This shows us how he can contribute towards caring for our environment. This is a great part of our Montessori grace and courtesy lessons and our children are taking it onboard so well!
