This year, in celebration of Maria Montessori's birthday, we wanted to honour her vision of fostering compassionate, socially responsible citizens by giving back to our local community.
With a focus on our Living World and the importance of caring for all living things, we sought a meaningful way to make a positive difference.
After reaching out to the Pet Food Bank, we connected with the wonderful Karen and Jase, who work tirelessly to support pets and families in need throughout our community. Together with our families at Montessori Ōtūmoetai and our friends at Montessori Primary School, we organised a collection drive to gather much-needed items, including pet food, bedding, toys, training pads, and other essential supplies.
Karen and Jase visited our centre to collect the donations and share more about the incredible work they do. They spent time with our tamariki, explaining how the Pet Food Bank supports animals and families facing difficult circumstances, and how community generosity helps ensure beloved pets receive the care they need. The visit provided a meaningful opportunity for the children to deepen their understanding of empathy, kindness, and responsible citizenship.
Through hearing about the challenges some families face in caring for their pets, the tamariki gained a greater appreciation for how helping others can have a positive impact on the wider community. The generosity shown by our Montessori community was inspiring. Karen and Jase were overwhelmed by the incredible donations received and expressed their gratitude to everyone who contributed. Through this project, our tamariki experienced first-hand how working together as a community can make a real difference in the lives of others.
At Montessori Ōtūmoetai, we believe that education extends beyond the classroom and into the wider world around us. This initiative beautifully reflected Montessori values of compassion, service, and respect for people, animals, and the environment, while empowering our tamariki to contribute positively to their community and care for the living world.
A sincere thank you to Karen and Jase for visiting us and for the invaluable work they do supporting animals and families in need. We are incredibly proud of our tamariki and grateful to our wonderful families and the Montessori Primary School community for helping make this project such a success.
