Celebrating and learning about Waitangi Day!

Every year, we recognize Waitangi Day with our children as a centre. Waitangi Day is widely recognized as New Zealand's national day, an occasion for reflecting on the Treaty and its place in Aotearoa.

The week leading up to Waitangi Day is full of learning experiences and opportunities that allow the children to learn about Waitangi Day in a way they’re able to understand. This time our tamariki of all ages enjoyed exploring the display at their leisure and throughout the day we explored different cultural activities such as making waka, doing some weaving, painting the Maori flag, making Maori patterns with stamps, and learning numbers, shapes, colors and waiatas in Te Reo.

Our team and children came dressed up in red, black, and white colors. Through these different activities, our children were able to enhance their cultural knowledge, imagination, and creativity. Also, children learned about Te Tiriti O Waitangi by making their class treaty. The Treaty of Waitangi glorifies having the same rights and privileges, similarly, our children made their rights that reflected equality and love.

The treaty thus acts as a driving force for revitalizing the Māori language and culture. We keep the spirit and promise of the Treaty alive by incorporating the Maori culture throughout our daily experiences and routines.
