In The Kiwi Room at BestStart Willow, to help support and reflect our Localised Curricumlum, we have introduced our Maori Atua into our daily practice. For the month of February we have been celebrating two of our most popular Atua. Ranginui (Sky Father) and Papatuanuku (Earth Mother). We have planted marakai in our garden, teaching our tamariki how to be kaitiaki of the earth. We have also celebrated Plunket Day, reflecting sea creatures from the depths of Tangaroa (The ocean) where our tamariki have learnt respect and how to care for our shores and seabeds. This has been amazing learning for all ako in our centre and when we feel our tamariki have become familar with our current Atua, we will celebrate our next two Atua again reflecting their honour through karakia, waiata, in pukapuka, manakitanga and by engaging our tamariki in the natural world creating success for all ako (learners).

"Ko te manu e kai ana i te miro noonaa te ngahere Ko te manu e kai ana i te matauranga noonaa te ao", "The bird that consumes the miro berry owns the forest, The bird that consumes knowledge owns the world". A beautiful whakatauki steering our kaiako and tamariki into the future.
