Celebrating children's identity

Here at Best Start Waikite Valley Kindy, we love to celebrate children's identity and who they are. For children, the largest part of their identity is how old they are and their birthdays.

We know that it means becoming a "big kid". Turning 3 often means there's more that children can do for themselves. Turning four means having special responsibilities as the tuakana or older children. It's filled with opportunities like sitting on the mat at lunchtime and starting school visits.

Turning five means the child is off to school. This means we get to wear the Korowai, take photos with our friends and have a special mat time where we sing the child's favourite songs and present them with their learning profile, graduation certificate and a few gifts.

The child gets to decide what they want to do for their birthday or last day. Some choose a dress-up day, and some choose a PJ Day. Whatever the child chooses, we make sure we celebrate together and have the best day ever!
