Here at BestStart Waitangirua, the Rereroa room have enjoyed learning and celebrating Chinese New Year 2023. Like many other cultures, this event allowed our kaiako (teachers) to connect with tamariki (children) and whanau of this culture and embrace it as a classroom culture.

We have learnt through our planning, discovery and creativity, that 'respect' in Chinese culture is important to all when giving and receiving gifts.

Activities: Making Chinese drums, cooking fried rice, face painting, identifying Chinese writing (peace joy and delightfulness), dress up red, yellow or year of the bunny, making lanterns, gold coin and envelopes and whanu relationships.

Red envelope depictions: Kaiako giving gifts while children were to receive them with two hands - as a sign of respect.
