Celebrating Diversity

Celebrating Eid: Honouring Diversity Through Experience

At our centre, observing Eid is a special opportunity to celebrate the rich mosaic of cultures our children, whānau and kaiako bring to our centre.

Eid is a festival marking the end of Ramadan, a month of reflection, kindness, and generosity—values that resonate deeply in both the Montessori philosophy and Te Whāriki’s vision of belonging and well-being. By sharing stories, songs, and traditions around Eid, we invite tamariki to see themselves as valued members of our learning community.

One of our Muslim family members brought in special food to share, including dates, bread and mango juice. Our tamariki learned to make samosas with them before eating together as a community. Our children were also engaged in many art and craft activities related to the festival.

In a Montessori setting, observing Eid isn’t just about a single event—it’s an ongoing commitment to weaving cultural practices into the daily life of our classroom. We encourage families to share their own stories, traditions and interests, prompting children to ask questions and make connections.

This inclusive approach supports a sense of belonging (mana whenua) and helps every child see difference as something to be celebrated.
