For Diwali the children have decided to decorate their very own diya (lamp). Diwali is a hindu festival which represents the festival of lights. As we were decorating the diyas. Kaiako Jyot and Shirley was sharing the story behind Diwali. As hindu legends express diyas was used as a celebration for Lord Rama and His wife Sita on their arrival back to their palace after a long exile period.

Diyas are a small type of lamp, lit on Diwali for worship and decorative purposes. Diyas come in a variety of options: they can be plain, colorful, simple, fancy, big or small! Traditionally they are made out of clay and then filled with oil to be lit.

Our Tamariki painted their diyas with bright colours and even used sparkly glitter.

During this interaction children are learning about the hindu culture and festival.
