At BestStart Manurewa Central we value, respect and celebrate all the different cultures of our children. This week we celebrated Diwali.

Diwali is a festival of lights and Hindus celebrate it with joy. During this festival, people light up their houses with Diyas (small-lamp made of clay). They worship the Lord Ganesha for welfare and prosperity and Goddess Lakshmi for wealth and wisdom. This festival is celebrated to mark the return of Lord Rama, Wife- Goddess Sita and brother Lakshman after 14 years of exile and his victory over the Demon Ravana. Hindus regard Diwali as a celebration of life and use the occasion to strengthen relationships. It marks the beginning of a new year and most people often wear new clothes to celebrate.

At the centre children made Diya using clay, made rangoli using coloured powder, made Indian sweets, engaged in art activities, henna, read stories and learnt Indian songs and dance.Through this celebration children learnt about social skills, fine motor skills, concentration, friendship and teamwork.
