Today we got into the spirit of the Hindi festival of colours – Holi. This was a day of celebrations as we came together with special powder paint, taking turns to colour each other, children and teachers alike. With so many of our whānau (families) who celebrate this festival, we were all honoured to be able to learn about and share this holiday together. The joy and fun on the children’s faces were evident as they laughed, smiled and participated in Holi. Of course no Holi festival is complete without us sharing a traditional Indian feast. We were amazed at how many brave children tasted the spices and dishes of India, with many gobbling it all up! On offer was channa masala (chickpea curry), rice and garlic roti. Learning gained through these celebrations: It is cultural experiences like these that develop tamariki (children’s) cultural awareness, stimulating their minds and helping them to appreciate and accept others. Furthermore, as we celebrate each child’s culture, it strengthens and develops their sense of identity and positive self-esteem. We invite all tamariki (children) from different cultures and backgrounds to join us and become a part of our inclusive and diverse whānau! (Family)
